How Calculations Work
Step 1 — Risk Amount
Risk Amount = Account Balance × (Risk % / 100)
Example: 10,000 USDT × 1% = 100 USDT Risk Amount.
Step 2 — Stop Loss Distance
Stop Distance = abs(Entry Price - Stop Loss)
Example: abs(105,000 - 102,000) = 3,000 USDT Distance (2.86%).
Step 3 — Recommended Position Size
Position Size = Risk Amount / Stop Distance
Example: 100 USDT / 3,000 = 0.033333 BTC.
Step 4 — Position Value (Notional)
Position Value = Position Size × Entry Price
Example: 0.033333 BTC × 105,000 = 3,500 USDT Notional Value.
Step 5 — Required Margin
Required Margin = Position Value / Leverage
Example: 3,500 USDT / 10x = 350 USDT Required Margin.
What Is Position Sizing?
Position sizing is one of the most important concepts in risk management. It determines how much capital is allocated to a single trade based on predefined risk parameters.
Proper position sizing helps traders:
- •Protect trading capital
- •Reduce emotional trading
- •Prevent overexposure
- •Maintain consistency across trades
- •Survive losing streaks
Professional traders rarely risk their full account on a single position. Instead, they define a fixed percentage of acceptable loss per trade.
Why Position Size Matters
Even profitable strategies can fail if position sizes are too large. Risk management is what separates systematic trading from gambling.
Using proper position sizing helps:
- •Avoid liquidation
- •Standardize trade exposure
- •Improve long-term survivability
- •Reduce emotional decision making
- •Control leverage risk
